Taurangamoana iwi Ngāi Te Rangi is crying foul over crown negotiator Rick Barker’s efforts to finalise the Hauraki settlement.
Chair Charlie Tawhiao says the former Labour cabinet minister is trying to strongarm iwi to sign off before Tauranga Moana has had a chance to discuss face to face their concerns about overlapping interests.
"His involvement in this has been detrimental to our tikanga and to the mana not just of Ngāi Te Rangi but of all iwi in Hauraki who have got an issue and who are unable to excercixse their mana in the way their tipuna expected them to. We see Rick Barker as the major obstacle to us achieving tikanga solutions to this issue between us and Hauraki," he says.
Mr Tawhiao says it’s a threat to long standing relationships Ngāi Te Rangi has with its neighbours.
