Ngāpuhi will have the chance to vote on whether sufficient change has been made to the tribe’s negotiating body to allow settlement talks to resume.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little and Ngāpuhi rangatira last night unanimously agreed on a final evolved mandate proposal.

It’s the culmination of almost three years of debate since the Waitangi Tribunal found the crown’s decision to accept Tuhoronuku’s mandate to negotiate failed to give enough weight to the role of hapū.

Mr Little says the proposal, developed after consultation hui throughout New Zealand and Australia, is now at the stage where the 110 hapu can vote.

Te Kōtahitanga representatives Rudy Taylor and Pita Tipene say it’s time for Ngāpuhi to have their say.

The evolved mandate hapū endorsement and voting process runs from November 9 to December 7.

Details on the endorsement process including how to register, vote and where hui will be held will be posted later today on www.govt.nz/ngapuhi
