Challenge to MWWL election fails
A challenge to changes to the Māori Women's Welfare League's constitution has failed, meaning president Prue Kapua can serve out a second term.
In a judgment on a review taken by league member Pauline Rewiti supported by unsuccessful candidate Materoa Dodd, Justice Rebecca Ellis found sufficient notice was given of the change allowing presidents to serve more than one three-year term.
However changes made to the league's handbook in 2015 are invalid, because they needed to be put to a vote.
Justice Ellis says the handbook changes had no practical effect on the outcome of the 2017 election.
She says the parties should cover their own costs.
