Charter schools outlawed

Parliament last night passed the Education Amendment Bill, scrapping the partnership school model.
National’s education spokesperson Nikki Kaye says the move should have been delayed until a Waitangi Tribunal claim into the closures was heard.
She says partnership schools have a strong track record of lifting Māori educational achievement and National will reinstate and expand the model within 12 months of it returning to Government.
About 1500 pupils are enrolled in the 11 kura hourua or partnership schools, which will all become either special character state schools or integrated schools at the start of next year.
