Challenge to make Maori health a priority
Waitangi Tribunal claimant Lady Tureiti Moxon from Hamilton’s Te Kohao Health says it’s not good enough that Maori life expectancy is still eight to 10 years shorter than other New Zealanders.
She says Maori receive inadequate care within mainstream health services, which is why they have tried to create their own health systems even though they are not given the same level of resourcing.
For too long Maori health has been subject to political whim.
"We need certainty. We need to know our people are going to get better and it is a priority for this Government and every other Government that comes in behind it," Lady Moxon says.
The Waitangi Tribunal will open hearings at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia next week on its kaupapa claim into health services.
