Hato Petera protesters meet eviction deadline

The flags and placard remain but protesters occupying the former Hato Petera College have gone.

It was raining as the group of 10 left the run-down buildings on Auckland’s North Shore about 4.30 yesterday afternoon, just a few minutes before the High Court’s 48 hour deadline.

They maintained they were the descendants of the original Ngati Paoa owners of the land, and it should be returned to them if it was no longer used as a Maori Catholic boarding school.

They’d moved into the school’s hostel in August as attempts by the school community to keep it open were sputtering to an end, with the Education Minister withdrawing the school’s integration licence.

The school’s owner, the Auckland Catholic Diocese, went to court to evict them.

The diocese says it is looking at proposals from other education providers to use the site.
