A member of Housing First Auckland says a count of the city's homeless should help agencies develop better services.
Last month's Ira Mata, Ira Tangata survey recorded 179 people sleeping rough and 157 sleeping in cars.
That means there are probably about 800 people who are homeless and another 3000 in transitional or emergency housing, acording to methodology developed by University of Otago statisticians.
Tipene Lemon says while it was only a snapshot in time, it helps to quantify the size of the problem and what needs to be done about it.
"The name Ira Mata, Ira Tangata is about people. It's not about numbers, and we understand the majority of those who are homeless, who are sleeping rough, are our people," he says.
