Review likely on digital shift after news stumble
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta wants to see planning for a digital future for Māori broadcasting.
The Māori broadcast funding agency Te Māngai Pāho has been considering some aspects of the shift, but its preference for a one-stop Māori news shop for television and radio is now generating push-back from Māori broadcasters.
Ms Mahuta says the shift to digital platforms is inevitable, but there are some quick leaders in iwi radio and many slow followers.
"I'd like to lead off on having a look at a review of how we get that shift happening. Greater alignment for Māori broadcasting is going to be in the area of reo revitalisation as well alongide building Māori content both in te reo Pākehā and te reo Māori so we have some opportunities here," she says.
