Members of the Black Ferns women’s rugby team visited the Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility yesterday to encourage them to seek another path in life.
Renee Wickliffe says it’s a place she could have ended up herself.
As a youngster she was involved in a scene where alcohol and drugs were prevalent.
"Rugby definitely saved my life. Just that pathway got me doing the wrong things at the time and I had to get out of Paeroa and find something I really enjoyed and it was rugby and touch, stick at that," she says.
Renee Wickliffe says going into the prison to share her story made her more nervous than going out to play a rugby international.
