Ahikāroa given reprieve

A Māori bilingual web series is to get a further season to establish itself.
New Zealand On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says Ahikāroa had recently been declined funding because there wasn’t enough in the main pot, but it is to get $950,000 from a special $4 million allocation in this year’s Budget aimed at generating more diverse local content.
She says a long list of applications was whittled down to six projects that will show what the agency can achieve with boosted funding in future years.
Other projects include $1 million for a children’s news pilot, $150,000 for captioning local content on the children’s online space Heihei, $1.5 million to support Pacific and Asian storytelling, $100,000 to create opportunities for Pacific music, and $300,000 for initiatives and regional workshops looking at ways to increase play of New Zealand artists on key streaming services.
