Kiingitanga treasures to go on display
Taonga from the collection of Kiingi Tuheitia will go on display at Auckland War Memorial Museum later this month in an exhibition to mark the 160th anniversary of Kiingitanga.
They include the Kiingitanga throne, the first time it has left Tuurangawaewae Marae; a whale bone tokotoko, fine cloaks and more,
Kiingi Tuheitia says Auckland Domain where the museum is located was the home of his ancestor Pootatau Te Wherowhero around the time he became the first Maaori king.
He says he’s pleased to share the taonga with all New Zealanders.
Te Paki o Matariki: 160 Years of Kiingitanga opens on October 28.
