Advocacy group Action Station are calling for te reo Māori and New Zealand history should be core subjects in all schools.
Campaigner Eliot Pryor says an online survey on the government's draft strategy for Māori found widespread support.
The strategy aims to have a million speakers by 2040.
Most of the 857 people polled felt the language was already a key element of national identity.
Mr Pryor says the government needs to go further and extend it to history.
"If everyone has a basic understanding of what happened in New Zealand when we refer to colonialism, what do we mean, what happened at Parihaka, where do we come from as a nation," he says.
