Iwi join fire alarm push
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is installing 500 smoke alarms in Northland homes to mark its daylight saving campaign.
Northland Area Manager Wipari Henwood says it is working with He Iwi Kotahi Tātou Trust Moerewa, Whakawhiti Ora Pai Te Kao and Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa as well as Habitat for humanity to reach whanau in isolated communities.
The alarms have been donated by insurance company AMI.
He says in the past 5 years almost two thirds of the more than 600 house fires in Northland were in homes without working smoke alarms.
