Henare backs Waipareira housing challenge

Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare is backing Te Whānau o Waipareira’s challenge to Auckland council housing policies.
Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere fronted up to the council’s governing board yesterday to express his frustration at the policy of its property arm Panuku to limit the percentage of social housing that can go on land it releases for development.
Mr Henare says one of the reasons for the housing crisis is the policies pursued by local and central government haven’t worked.
"If we’re going to shut out the sector of our community – young people, a new generation of people, first home buyers, many of them Māori – we need to do things differently and i don't see why they simply can't raise the cap, make it accessible for people that need it the most," he says.
