Te Kākano seeding excitement on NZ chart
An album of te reo Māori tunes has roared up the iTunes New Zealand album chart.
Te Kākano is a collaboration by Pere Wihongi, Mere Arihi Pipi-Takoko, Makaira Berry and Hamiora Tuari, fusing soul, pop, and R&B.
It was produced by the Sonz of Zion's No Filters Studios and launched on Sunday on TV3's The Hui.
Wihongi, who has a kapa haka background as well as being part of the Maimoa collective, says the public response is reassuring.
"It's exactly why we make our waiata for our tamariki, for our rangatahi and of course to contribute all waiata reo Māori to the whole music industry here in Aotearoa," he says.
Te Kākano is only available on iTunes and Spotify.
