Jade mastery why Chinese at Waewae
Chinese master jade carvers could be part of the teaching staff of a planned New Zealand-based pounamu carving institute.
Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Waewae this week hosted a delegation of Chinese jade experts and dignataries, including three of the 38 people who hold the title of master jade carver given by the Chinese Advanced Jade Carving Institute.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu kaiwhakahaere Lisa Tumahai says the visit to Hokitika built on an earlier visit in 2016 when a partnership agreement was signed between the Beijing-based Chinese Jade Culture and Research Association and Ngāti Waewae-owned Wae Wae Pounamu.
She says the relationship could add considerable value and prestige to the taonga.
