Ngāi Tahu picks ecologists for lakes guardian role
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nominees Sandra Cook and Jane Kitson have been appointed to the eight-member Guardians of Lakes Manapouri, Monowai and Te Anau.
Ms Cook is the kaiwhakahaere of Ōraka Aparima Rūnaka, and a former member of the NZ Conservation Authority and senior advisor to the Iwi Leaders' Group.
Dr Kitson from Invercargill is an ecologist and environmental scientist with research interests in freshwater, mahinga kai and cultural monitoring.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage also reapointed Te Anau Fish and Game officer Bill Jarvie to the eight-member group and appointed aquatic ecologist Laurel Teirney, who is a past Guardian of Lake Wanaka and Fiordland Marine Guardian.
She says the Guardians is to advise her on matters arising from environmental, ecological and social impacts of the power schemes on these lakes, as well as advising on the operating guidelines for the lakes.
