Te Puea Memorial Marae plans to share what it has learned about tackling urban homelessness.
It is holding a symposium on Wednesday with researchers from Ko ngā wā kāinga hei whakamahorahora – the Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities National Science Challenge – who have been working with the Mangere-based marae over the past year.
Research co-leaders Rau Hoskins and Jenny-Lee Morgan say having the ability to study what works in Māori communities has given new insights.
Researchers interviewed clients at the Marae and observed how its model of housing and wraparound services is applied.
Ms Morgan says the ancient practice of manaakitanga is at the heart of the Marae-based intervention, it is part of the DNA of Te Puea Memorial Marae, which provides a cultural landscape of care.
Marae chair Hurimoana Dennis says the research puts a presentable face to the homeless problem.
