Charlotte Severne first wahine Māori Trustee

Geologist Charlotte Severne of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāi Tūhoe has been appointed the new Māori Trustee, replacing Jamie Tuuta.
In her new role she will perform a range of statutory functions around the administration of Māori land and other trusts, including some that are developing affordable housing.
She will also head Te Tumu Paeroa, which manages more than 100,000 hectares of Māori land on behalf of almost 100,000 owners.
Dr Severne is a former chief scientist for oceans and Māori development at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, and has been Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori and Pasifika at Massey University since 2016.
She has extensive governance experience with Māori land, including serving on the boards of Tuarōpaki Power Company, Rotoaira Forest Trust, Opepe Farm Trust, Lake Rotoaira Trust, Tauhara Middle 15 and Tauhara Mountain Trust.
She is also an independent advisory panel member of the Government’s Provincial Fund and a member of the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group.
Māori Development Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta says she is keen that during her three year term Dr Serverne can strengthen governance of Maori land.
