Ruanui up for another seabed battle

Ngati Ruanui is preparing for another round in the courts over Trans Tasman Resources plan to mine the seabed off Patea.
Kaiarataki Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says the South Taranaki iwi believes the Australian company is to appeal a High Court decision that sent its consent back to the Environment Protection Agency for reconsideration.
The company has until September 25 to formally lodge the appeal.
Ms Packer says the iwi has fought and won the battle twice and shouldn’t have to keep fighting it, especially when the court has rejected the company’s so called adaptive management approach.
"At no stage should our environment be up for guinea pig trials and extraction and essentially this is what this is. TTR couldn’t provide the evidence before, during and after their processes that what they were going to do environmentally wasn’t going to be catastrophic" she says.
The High Court has clearly indicated that the EPA got its consent decision wrong at law.
