Pākeha names prevail in Tāmaki Makaurau
Auckland Council’s environment and community committee wants to see more Māori naming of parks and places across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Chair Penny Hulse says the initiative is part of the wider Te Kete Rukuruku programme, which involves the collection and telling of unique stories of Tāmaki Makaurau in partnership with the 19 mana whenua iwi and hapū.
Fewer than 10 percent of Auckland parks and places have Māori names.
Ms Hulse says the naming programme will enable Māori to see and hear their language being used in their community, and provides an opportunity for all Aucklanders, and particularly tamariki, to learn te reo, Māori history and values.
So far 11 local boards have signed up for the naming programme and the others will be asked again to join next year.
