Partnership Ministry puts TPK in spotlight

New Zealand First MP Shane Jones says the creation of a new Office for Crown Maori Partnerships means questions need to be asked about the future of the Ministry for Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri.
Mr Jones says it's important the crown follows up on the thousands of commitments it has made to iwi and hapu over 30 years of treaty settlements.
The task list for new office comes out of a lengthy consultation process.
Crown Maori Partnerships Minister Kelvin Davis also needs to deliver on some of the expectations that came out of his lengthy consultation on the new portfolio as well.
"It's a challenging issue to try to gather forward the moemoea of te ao Maori and then turn it into a compelling course of government action or indeed establish an institution, and it raises the question what is the purpose of TPK? What functions do they undertake that are remotely relevant to what the Government is trying to achieve? And I think the unfinished business in terms of Maori-Crown treaty relations is resetting, revamping and establishing what is the raison d'etre for TPK," Mr Jones says.
He is encouraging Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta to review the core purpose of her ministry.
