High trust needed for Whānau Ora

One of the founders of whanau ora says some providers are still struggling with the idea of putting whānau at the centre of the process.
Dame Tariana Turia says whanau ora has to be about whānau taking back control of their lives.
What she’s hearing at this week’s biennial Whānau Ora Conference in Tāmaki Makaurau is people are starting to understand that, backed up with high quality research on what has been achieved.
But there are still some who think in terms of provider or business as usual where the provider maintains control.
"And we’ve got to get over ourselves and start to step back and enable whānau to be in control of their own destiny and that's hard. It's really hard when you think you can see everything that's wrong and you think the family can't, so it's an important change of attitude from all of us to begin to trust whānau to know what's best for themselves," Dame Tariana says.
