The Provincial Growth Fund is to provide up to $6 million to a project that will highlight the dual heritage Māori and European have in the Gisborne region.
The Mt Titirangi – Puhi Kai Iti Connection is part of the Tairāwhiti Navigation programme being developed in time for commemorations of the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook landing in Tūranga in 1769.
Regional Economic Minister Shane Jones says the investment will fund the Titirangi summit upgrade, which includes a visitor facility and carpark redevelopment.
It will help to increase productivity and tourism opportunities as well as recognise important tūpuna, such as Te Maro of Ngāti Oneone, the leading chief at the time.
The bulk of the $152 million investment package for Tairāwhiti announced today by Mr Jones and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is the $137 million to be spent improving East Coast roads.
There is also $300,000 to pilot a forestry training course as a solution to the growing forestry skills shortage, a $5.5 million loan towards the $12 million redevelopment of Gisborne Airport, and $500,000 to boost capacity at the Far East Saw Mill.
