Final bell for Hātō Petera
Education Minister Chris Hipkins has cancelled the integration agreement for Hātō Petera College, effective today.
That means there can be no more state funding for the 90-year-old Catholic Māori boarding school on Auckland’s North Shore.
Mr Hipkins says the school is no longer able to provide a quality of education.
The school’s roll has fluctuated between 1 and 5 this year, down from around 20 last year and just under 50 in 2016, and there are limited opportunities for the students to have social interaction with peers.
The cancellation is in mutual agreement with the proprietor, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Auckland, who says he would like the land to continue to be used for educational purposes consistent with the original deed of gift from the Crown.
The Ministry of Education and the proprietor will provide assistance as needed to help the remaining students enrol at other schools.
