Bold action needed on waste mountain
An advisor with waste recycling movement Para Kore says Māori communities are waking up to the importance of reducing the amount of waste they produce.
Jared Hiakita’s work in the far north has come to the attention of the North American Association for Enviromental Education.
He’s off to the association’s conference in Spokane, Washington in October to receive an award as one of the top 30 under-30 change-makers from around the world.
Almost 300 marae, kura and other communities have signed up to the zero waste kaupapa.
"It’s becoming more and more apparent how much damage and how much waste we’ve leached out into the environment. We are really in a time of need to act boldly and make some serious changes," Mr Hiakita says.
