War stories at heart of communities
War stories at heart of communities
The latest round of a fund to commemorate the wars and conflicts in Aotearoa New Zealand Fund is now open for applications.
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says Te Pūtake o Te Riri supports whānau, hapū and iwi to bring to life the stories of their past and present that speak to Aotearoa’s cultural evolution.
Examples of commemorative activities may include local tours or events, the development of resources or community wananga.
She says only a small portion of the community know the stories of the many notable rangatira whose prowess in war, strategic and tactical feats are compelling and continue to impact on how communities have settled and relate to their own stories.
There is $4 million in the fund over four years.
The first He Rā Maumahara – national commemoration day took place in Kororāreka in March hosted by Te Tai Tokerau.
The next one will take place in Taranaki on October 28 next year.
Te Pūtake o Te Riri – Wars and Conflicts in New Zealand Fund application information including eligibility is on the Te Puni Kōkiri website: https://tpk.govt.nz/en/whakamahia/te-putake-o-te-riri-wars-and-conflicts-in-new-zeal.
