Making the case for justice reform
Making the case for justice reform
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says to achieve lasting change in the criminal justice system it's important the Government get the public behind it.
She's bouyed by the response to last week's criminal justice summit, but the detail will take more work.
It may mean reversing changes that were made because of public or political reaction to individual cases, or revisiting reforms that had unintended consequences.
She says everyone wants to be safe in their communities and have an effective justice system that seeks restitution from offenders while making sure they don't reoffend.
"The question is just how do we deliver it and so having that conversation and hopefully being able to expose the bits that are failing in our system and bring more options in I hope will mean we can shift the ground on the debate because if we don't, that means we will be building a new prison every two to three years," Ms Ardern says.
