Ruatoria gearing up for cannabis industry

It’s all go at Hikurangi Cannabis with the Ministry of Health granting the licence it needs to breed the varieties of the plant suitable for use in medicines.
Managing director Panapa Ehau says the Ruatoria-based company can now draw down pledged funding and start building the infrastructure needed for a medicinal cannabis industry such as high tech greenhouses and processing facilities.
It’s also looking at the needs of its workforce.
"We’re a small community here in Ruatoria and this is likely to be one of the biggest employers in this area so there are all those community and social things that need to be adhered to like having the housing and the service industry and all that kind of stuff," Mr Ehau says.
Parliament is expected to pass a new medicinal cannabis law before Christmas.
