Dental school to brighten south Auckland smiles
South Auckland residents should get better access to dental care with the building of a new teaching facility.
The University of Otago is building a $28 million dental teaching facility and 32-chair patient treatment clinic within the Counties Manukau District Health Board’s Manukau Super Clinic on Great South Rd.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne says it should make a real difference to people’s lives and the community’s health and wellbeing.
It should also strengthen relationships and partnerships with Māori and Pacific communities.
The facility will follow the long-standing social contract model operated successfully in Dunedin, where patients receive treatment provided by students under supervision at a low cost.
Forty-eight final-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery students will be assigned to the Counties Manukau facility at any one time.
Work should start on the site later this year, with the project due for completion in 2020.
