Conservation joins Te Waihora governance effort
Ngai Tahu kaiwhakahaere Lisa Tumahai has welcomed the entry of the Department of Conservation into the co-governance partnership for Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere.
Other partners include Environment Canterbury, Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council.
Ms Tumahai, who is the co-chair with Environment Canterbury’s Steve Lowndes, says the department owns a lot of land on the lake margin, already has a joint management plan with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and it’s involved in the Living Water partnership with Fonterra.
It is also the agency responsible for inanga / whitebait, one of the iconic species to be found in Te Waihora.
The shallow lake south of Christchurch is New Zealand’s fifth-largest and also one of the most nutrient-polluted.
