Tikanga gambit backfires as Hauraki forges ahead
The lead negotiator for the Hauraki Collective believes calls for a tikanga process to discuss overlapping claims has been shown to be a ploy to delay Hauraki’s settlement.
Paul Majurey says after months of calling for tikanga discussions, Tauranga Moana iwi have spurned an invitation to set a date and informed his iwi it will see them in court.
That seems to be a continuation of last year’s tactics when Ngai Te Rangi unilaterally pulled out of talks.
He says it won’t stop the settlement’s momentum now the crown has signed the deed.
"We’ll continue to do what we need to do now in this post-settlement space. We're setting up our entities. We're arranging to have the early release transfers take place while we wait for our legislation and we will remain open to having tikanga discussions when Tauranga Moana are ready," Mr Majurey says.
