Hipkins considers Hāto Petera
There’s fresh hope at Hāto Petera, with the Education Minister this morning saying he has still not made a decision on whether to cut the school’s integration funding.
Chris Hipkins with Associate Minister and local MP Kelvin Davis and Tāmaki Mākaurau MP Peeni Henare were at the Māori Catholic boarding school on Auckland’s North Shore to hear from the school community and iwi.
The school is hanging on by a thread with only a handful of students enrolled this year, its boarding hostels closed and the Auckland Catholic diocese refusing to grant it a long term lease.
Mr Hipkins said he wanted to hear from the community before he made his decision.
He is also talking to the church and the ministry about the options.
School supporters presented a plan they said could ensure the school's future, including the development of shared facilities and partnerships with tertiary organisations.
