Employer subsidy to get rangatahi trained

The Government today launched a new scheme for young people who have been on a benefit for six months or more.
Mana in Mahi – Strength in Work will encourage employers to take on rangatahi and help them work towards a Level 4 qualification.
The scheme will pay income equivalent to the person’s benefit, with the employer topping that up at least to the minimum wage, and be supported with up to $6000 for pastoral care.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the scheme is about supporting young people to earn an apprenticeship or other qualification so they can get on the pathway to life-long work.
Mana in Mahi will start with a pilot for up to 150 people with construction firm Downer New Zealand and Wellington Hospitality Group.
It will then become available for up to 4000 places following evaluation from the middle of 2019.
