Hokey pokey radio defended
New Zealand First is standing up for Māori radio as the sector’s funder looks at rationalisation.
Te Māngai Pāho has a new broadcasting strategy focused on delivery of te reo Māori, and it’s working on new ways to fund content.
MP Shane Jones says while any decisions are likely to go through Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta, the NZ First caucus is behind the continuation of Māori community radio.
"In my experience a lot of people in the north, they all listen and you could say it's a bit hokey pokey at times but hey, a lot of the communities it services, they're not looking for a product like Radio New Zealand, they're not looking for a product like Mike Hosking, they're looking for something that's a mirror image of themselves," he says.
