Chicken giant can't hide from Kaipara backlash
Opponents of Tegel's plans for a chicken mega-farm beside a Dargaville marae intend to turn out in force tomorrow for a protest outside the company's Auckland headquarters.
Diedre Sims from Direct Animal Action, whose video of conditions at another Tegel facility has sparked an investigation by the Ministry for Primary Industries, says the company thought it would be able to steamroll opposition.
She says tomorrow would have been the first day of the consent hearing which Tegel has put off, saying it needed more time to prepare.
"The Kaipara locals want to keep the pressure on so came up with the idea to come down on this day and protest so we will be there along with members of the Kapehu Marae," she says.
The protest will be outside Tegel's Carlton Gore offices at noon.
