Facebook friends for predator control effort
Tūhoe artist and activist Tame Iti wants to see a determined push to rid the ngāhere of predators without using poison.
Almost 200,000 people have viewed his online documentary on 1080 over the past couple of weeks.
He says Tūhoe has not permitted the use of 1080 drops in Te Urewera, but possums, stoats, rats and other predators still need to be kept under control.
The key is a combination of technology and putting people on the ground.
"If I’ve got 100,000 people on my Facebook why don’t we utilise that energy. We’ll go and create a war with the possum and the rat and the stoat. It’s manageable. We’ve got the technology to be able to do that. You can lay out all your traps there, you put your GPS there, you do it section by section," Mr Iti says.
