Uni to lose Victoria name

Victoria University will in future be known as the University of Wellington, or Te Herenga Waka.

The university’s council has agreed in principle to drop the Victoria, and also to adopt a new Māori name.

Te Herenga Waka is also the name of the university’s marae.

Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith says the new names will allow the university to better align with the city of Wellington and help improve it international reputation through better clarity and recognition.

The university was concerned it was being confused with other Victoria universities around the world.

The council is expected to make its final decision at next month’s meeting.
