Hauraki ready for tikanga talks
Pare Hauraki has invited the leadership of Ngati Ranginui, Ngati Pukenga and Ngai Te Rangi to make arrangements for face-to-face talks about issues arising from its treaty settlement.
Ngai Te Rangi has demanded a so-called tikanga process before any settlement but Hauraki chair Paul Majurey says the collective’s view was the settlement must be signed first.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little yesterday announced he intended to do that within a couple of weeks.
Mr Majurey says that clears the way to discuss the treaty settlement arrangements for the Tauranga harbour and catchments through the Tauranga Moana Framework, which brings together iwi and government agencies.
"What’s important to remember is that for Ngati Ranginui and Ngai Te Rangi, their settlements have been held up by this as well so I'm sure their people will want to move on and get into a post-settlement space, so yes, something before Christmas would be great," he says.
Mr Majurey says Hauraki has approached the claims in a respectful way and hasn’t descended to the aggression coming its way and that will continue.
