Mayors show pathway to mahi
Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says a new partnership with the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs should boost the prospect of young people finding work in their own communities.
A memorandum of understanding was signed with the taskforce at last week’s Local Government NZ conference by Ms Mahuta, Employment Minister Willie Jackson, Youth Minister Peeni Henare and Building and Construction Minister Jenny Salesa.
She says in her own electorates she sees centres where young people have an expectation they will have to move away after school to find jobs or careers.
"The Mayor’s Taskforce is a way of trying to invest in some foundation skills and training and partnerships and collaborations with business and tertiary institutions so young people see there is a huarahi towards work within their own district," Ms Mahuta says.
In some areas the taskforce has proved effective in tackling the number of young people not in employment, education or training.
