Kaikoura people have protested plans to build a coastal cycleway that will cross an urupā and other sacred sites, cut off access to traditional food gathering areas and ruin one of the country's best surf breaks.

The cycleway from Okiwi Bay to Mangamaunu was announced last year by then-transport minister Simon Bridges, who said it would create a safer way for walkers and cyclists to experience the coast.

Since then opposition has grown, especially as the permits were established through emergency legislation.

March organiser Karen Starkey says there has been no consultation with Maori owners or the community.
