Former MP Donna Awatere-Huata wants an investigation into whether elements in the police have conspired with victim support advocate Louise Nicholas to attack the appointment of Wally Haumaha as deputy police commissioner.
An inquiry will be held into the process around Mr Haumaha’s appointment, after Ms Nicholas said she was angry the selection panel and the Police Minister weren’t informed about Mr Haumaha’s historic comments about three colleagues she alleged raped her as a teenager.
Ms Awatere-Huata says the fact is the trio were found not guilty in two trials.
She says Ms Nicholas now works for the police, and there seems to be police politics at work.
"A lot of those who supported the Tuhoe campaign, this monstrous attack on Tuhoe, are still in the police and I think they can not just bear the idea that a Māori, a good Māori man, really trying to deconstruct the racist culture within the police, they just can’t tolerate the idea that he can be the assistant commissioner," Mrs Awatere-Huata says.
Since the Louise Nicholas trial 14 years ago Mr Haumaha has been honoured for his work, including repairing the relations between police and Māori in the wake of the Tuhoe raids and in improving the way police dealt with sexual abuse allegations.
