Pōmare example still relevant


Health and culture are top of mind in Taranaki this weekend as the iwi hold their annual celebration of the life and work of Sir Maui Pōmare.
Te Rā ō Maui Pōmare at Ōwae Marae in Waitara today and tomorrow includes sessions on the environment, medical research, the presentation of scholarships, and wānanga on traditions songs and chants.
Te Kāhui ō Taranaki Trust chief executive Wharehoka Wano says the doctor turned politician continues to inspire 90 years after his death.
"He was moving on to our papakainga around the motu to bring a new way in terms of dealing with a lot of the health issues of that time. He was just such a huge leader, one of those early Māori MPs. The Sim Commission in terms of the muru whenua, the confiscations here in Taranaki and wider. It’s so important we acknowledge him and his leadership at such a crucial time of our development," Mr Wano says.
