Te Maru o Kaituna River Authority has launched a new document aimed at guiding local government, iwi and the wider community to protect the Kaituna River and its tributaries.
The authority was formed out of the Tapuika iwi settlement and also involves Waitaha, Te Pūmautanga ō Te Arawa Ngāti Rangiwewehi, and Ngāti Whakauae, in partnership with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Rotorua Lakes, Western Bay and Tauranga councils.
Chair Dean Flavell says the document signed at Moko Marae in Te Puke on Friday pulls together previous strategies around the river and the Maketū estuary to manage the land and the water.
It includes eight objectives.
"Water quality is a big one. How much water is used is another big one. For iwi and hapu, reconnecting with the river and being able to bring through their desired outcomes and producing a sustainable river based on tikanga, our values as tangata whenua," Mr Flavell says.
Te Maru ō Kaituna will now develop an action plan for iwi, hapu, local government and the wider community.
