Ngāti Pū takes shots at Hauraki settlement

Delays in settling the Pare Hauraki claims is giving more time for internal opposition to grow.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little is under pressure from Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei and Tauranga Moana's Ngai Te Rangi to drop properties in their rohe from the settlement redress.
Now elements in Whangamatā-based Ngāti Pū have aligned themselves with calling for a rethink.
Spokesperson Connie Ake says the negotiations failed to protect the interests of Ngāti Pū.
"The crown has informed the rūnanga of Ngāti Pū that to access settlement redress members must use a different whakapapa to the one they successfully claimed under WAI 355. The crown didn't follow its own policy. It conferred the mandate against our wishes and it is pretty much enforcing assimilation by integrating us into a different tribal whakapapa through legislation," she says.
Hauraki chief negotiator Paul Majurey says internal mandate challenges like the one involving Ngāti Pū are a common part of settlements and it’s not a reason to delay the signing.
