Whānau Ora bigger than crisis management
The Minister for Whānau Ora believes it’s time for the initiative to be seen as more than crisis management for whānau in need.
A report out today shows more than 12,500 families engaged in Whānau Ora in the 2016-2017 year.
The report included a mix of hard data and anecdotal evidence from the three commissioning agencies and multitude of providers.
Peeni Henare says he’s pleased with progress so far, but there is still great potential in the unified service delivery model not just for social well being but for economic prosperity.
"We need that kaupapa right across not just in the social space where at the moment if feels like crisis management for families when we know what Whānau ora to be is about aspirations and whānau doing it together and that includes economic well being so let’s get it done," he says.
Mr Henare will push for more funding and for other government agencies to embrace the concept rather than it being seen as an appendage on the side.
