Ōpōotiki District Council wants to officially add macrons to the district’s name.
Councillor Arihia Tuoro says the council already uses macrons in documents and signage, as do many other institutions such as schools and community groups.
Most council signs are correct already, but a change would mean other government agencies such as New Zealand Transport Agency would need to replace or alter signs, probably as part of their normal renewal or damage replacement programme.
The council has asked the New Zealand Geographic Board to recommend the change
