Land rights played out in Cherry Orchard
Anton Chekov's classic play The Cherry Orchard has been transferred from the turn of the twentieth century Russia to Hawke's Bay in the 1970s the Auckland Theatre Company's latest production.
Director Colin McColl enlisted Albert Belz, Tainui Tukiwaho and Phillipa Campbell for the adaptation.
Actor Rawiri Paratene says it adds more layers to the story of land loss and social change.
"I love the treatment we're working with and I think that Maori audiences will get more out of it than any Pakeha audience can and my desire is for Maori to come and see this because I think they will see it with different eyes," he says.
The Cherry Orchard opens tonight and runs for two weeks at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.
