Bidois wins Northcote, Halbert will be back

Northcote remains in the hands of the National Party after the weekend’s by-election, but the scene is set for another tough fight in 2020.
Newcomer Dan Bidois survived a strong challenge from Labour’s Shanan Halbert to retain what was previously considered a National stronghold, but his election night majority of 1362 was almost 5000 votes lower than his predecessor Jonathon Coleman’s margin.
But turnout was just 43 percent.
After conceding, Mr Halbert told supporters he intends to hold Mr Bidois to the promises made in the campaign.
"He has two years. We will be watching. And albeit that I wished him luck this evening that responsibility holds tight and it holds true because it will be only our own that hold us accountable and I will be there in 2020," he says.
