Associate Social Development Minister Peeni Henare wants to see non-government organisations making more use of data.
The Tamaki Makaurau MP and ministerial colleagues have just started a round of hui to discuss the future role of the Social Investment Agency set up by the previous Government and how personal information can be used by agencies and policymakers.
Demands that NGOs hand over personal data created opposition to National’s social investment policy, and Mr Henare says the Labour-led Government intends to take a different approach.
He says the previous approach was a one way street and it was about what government rather than communities wanted.
"Government holds large chunks of data and we tell people stories. That doesn't seem right to me. We know that organisations like Waipareira, tribal organisations and communities, if given access to that data can actually tell the story of their community and make the decisions that are relevant and important to their community," Mr Henare says.
